Somehow I have absolutely never heard the Russian folktale of The Giant Turnip My students were all totally familiar with it, but I was clueless At any rate, this is an Appalachia version of the tale My kids and I enjoyed it Miz Houghton, you made that character sound so spunky , and it will be perfect to start off our writing unit of fiction stories where an inanimate object is a character.

An Appalachian re telling of the classic Russian folklore story The Turnip Bright colors and a fun text make this a good read aloud for older kids If you are good at accents, pile on your fake southern accent unless, of course, you are from the south I particularly love Little Isabelle, whose dancing makes the carrot grow Barry Root s illustrations of Little Isabelle s wild dancing is what made me start reading this book in the first place.

This is an Americanized version of the classic Russian children s story, Gigantic Turnip The narrative is fun to read aloud and just screams to be read with a southern accent, but I prefer the original tale The watercolor and gouache illustrations are nicely detailed and complement the narrative well We enjoyed reading this book together and our girls want to make Little Isabelle s Carrot Puddin the recipe is included at the end of the story.

This book could easily be developed into a science lesson as we observed in our Science methods class Compare how to grow carrots and the book, then compare the size of the carrot versus a typical carrot Then have students grow a carrot from seeds in the classroom Track the amount of water and fertilizer they give the carrot and its size as it grows Could combine this with a math lesson in graphs by tracking this growth over time.

A funny story about a carrot plant that grows into a giant carrot Each person has their own idea for what to cook the carrot into as the plant grows One little girl sings and dances around the plant which seems to cause it to grow bigger and bigger This book can lead to a discussion about what plants really need versus what was simply written for fun in the book Recommended reading level Ages 4 and up Pre K.

I think this book would be great to read at the beginning of a unit in science for grades 1 3 on plant life This book focuses on the growth of carrots The activity could start out by looking at a carrott seed I would ask the students to describe that seed to me What kind of seed do you think it is Where did the seed come from This book is a great resource to use while growing the carrot plants in the class.
