I find the desk and brooding mature of these Nordic mysteries thrillers very appealing Not sure what that says about me This is the first in a planned trilogy and it is off to an intriguing start Jana, a prosecutor with a famous prosecutor father, is a cold, aloof, character, respected but not well liked by the detectives in the unit She has a past though, one she doesn t remember anything about before the age of nine, when she was a adopted The killing of the head of customs and then a young bo [...]

Emelie Schepp is good as Jo Nesbo Marked For Life is one of the best Swedish crime novels that I have ever read Kerstin Juhlen apparently found her husband dead on the floor when she came home from a walk to the beach and back Her husband Hans Juhlen was head of department dealing with asylum cases at the Migration Agency local office When Kerstin entered the house she didn t see anyone else A window was open when Kerstin came home and she closed it as she was afraid that someone might come back [...]

Marked for Life is the first book in the noir trilogy featuring public prosecutor Jana Berzelius a trilogy I look forward to continuing.Jana is such a complex and interesting character I love that Schepp didn t create your typical main protagonist Jana is not likeable, in fact, one could argue she s the opposite, cold, distance, rude and I loved every part of her character While she wasn t likeable, her complex character and her will to do whatever she felt was necessary to survive made this nov [...]

In providing this review, honesty is important So let s address the rhetorical elephants in the room First, this book is the first in a mystery trilogy written by a Swedish author There are similarities to the Girl with a Dragon Tattoo series, including a strong female lead who had a hidden abusive upbringing, a large cast of characters, and a fast paced story style Second, the translation from Swedish to English isn t always the most flowing of styles I read through many reviews on and to see t [...]

Another book to fuel my addiction to Nordic Noir.Jana Berzelius is a prosecutor, and as the book info notes young, brilliant and emotionally cold. The book starts with the murder of a migration official, and then with the discovery of the body of a young boy who was also killed Both cases seem to be connected, and are also connected to Jana Berzelius. The young boy has had letters carved in his flesh, and Jana also had them too Between remembering and wondering what her real story is, Jana is faci [...]

I thought this book was fantastic with all the play on the killing of Hans Juhl n, and who killed him It then goes off and changes players, but you don t quite know how it s playing The police and the prosecutor try to solve the mystery A well thought out book with a clincher of an ending which promises of the same.

Meh.This is the first in a planned trilogy and boy, does it show It reads very much like its only reason for being is to serve as a springboard for things to come it barely passes muster as a standalone story The concept for the protagonist Jana Berzelius is promising but something is lost in the execution Also, and maybe due to the translation from Swedish to English, the dialogue is painfully on the nose Open the book to any conversation between characters and you ll hear it immediately, so to [...]
