I m not sure what to make of this book, as some parts were quite fascinating and others felt flat This book covers a part of Rio de Janeiro that so many people have seen, whether in person or in photos the favelas, the slums of Rio, easily recognizable as small colorful dwellings built on top of one another up the mountains Rocinha, the largest of Rio s favelas, was under the control of one don after another until the subject of this book, Nem, took over The author chronicles Nem s rise to autho [...]

As a Brazilian who lived in Rio but also grew up in Germany, Ihave a bit of a different perspective on Rio but I love that city to bits, even though it s one hell of a crazy dangerous place I heard about this book on Brazilian websites when it was released in Brazil and I immediately ordered it I still remember the night when Nem was caught in the back of a car, I as every other Brazilian watched it on TV and I remember how I felt really disgusted by the way the police and press treated Nem in t [...]

Such a great read I knew nothing about Brazil and the favelas when I started reading this book My mind was blown over the amount of corruption that exists in Brazil, and how Dons run favelas like a fiefdom Nem is such an interesting person, who while obviously a leader of a drug cartel, is much than that It is impossible to paint the people in this book as good vs bad This book has reminded me that so much of the world is comprised of shades of grey, and that people like Nem exist in those area [...]

A well researched nonfiction book on the drug trade in Brazil, the global marketing of cocaine, and the rise to power of an impoverished boy to drug lord, Antonio Francisco Bonfim Lopes Nem in the favela, Rocinha, in Rio de Janeiro Glenny interviews Nem in the maximum security prison, Campo Grande While well documented, I am not sure it is of importance for readers to know about yet another drug cartel and drug kingpin.

With a great sense of story telling, true crime writer Misha Glenny tells the tale of the rise and fall of the boss of the largest favela slum in Rio A husband, father, former magazine distributor, and beloved community figure, Nem of Rocinha was also a ruthless crime kingpin and drug lord Full of all the color and corruption that is modern Brazil, it s a story begging for a movie on the scale of Scarface, or Goodfellas BH.

This book provides an account of the life and times of a notorious Brazilian gangster.I found this book incredibly dry and felt I didn t really learn anything significant which is a shame since it should have been a riveting read and could have highlighted some key issues in society.

From A Whole Life to a real life on another side of the world Nemesis tells how Nem asks the ruler of his favela for money to save his daughters life and offers to work to repay it, leading him to eventually take over the favela himself, the drugs, the deals with the police, the usurpers and rival gangs, until he is the most famous and feared criminal in Brazil.Reading Misha Glenny s fascinating and enthralling account, you would be forgiven for thinking that his imagination was greater than tha [...]

I can t fathom the amount of time, research, interviews, court reporting, etc that Misha Glenny put into this book And it pays off The reader really feels immersed in the story, because the author immersed himself in every aspect of the story possible There is sometimes too much information at once regarding the nuances of Rio s police structures specifically , but the book is so well put together A fascinating story for sure, and one worth reading.

This is a fascinating look at the favelas of Rio The favelas have a reputation for extreme violence thanks in part due to the highly prolific uprisings in the favelas around the Olympics and World Cup Reporters described vague street gangs prison gangs drug syndicates as ruling these neighborhoods and directing the chaos Glenny finally brings some detail and explanation to the situation.Although the focus of the book is on Antonio Francisco Bonfim Lopes, aka Nem, Glenny describes the social orde [...]

This is well written and fascinating I already have substantial interest in Brazil and knowledge to a point of its culture, which helps understand the perspective The longer story the history of favelas or slums, the governmental corruption spanning literally centuries and different regimes, the constantly corrupt police, the rise of the cocaine trade, and drug traffickers taking over the slums is heart rending The shorter story a young father who grew up idolizing the benevolent drug lord of th [...]

This one is a good book on organized crime that looks like it lost its direction somewhere in the middle of the story Or maybe author just did not know how to present all of the information he came across Author tells a very frightening story of Rio s favelas, how they came to be and how they evolved into ghetto s used by politicians of Rio as nothing than voting sources As such they proved to be a very suitable areas for gangsters of all kinds due to high turn over rate of various criminal kin [...]

I first became interested in Brazil when a friend moved there to work and study The stay was reported to be unwelcoming and cut short Then, the run up to the Olympic games further peaked my interest The information on the slums paints a far far different picture than Walt Disney s The Three Caballeros cartoon infused with Copacabana and Ipanema beach scenes. An apparently famous Brazilian investigative reporter looks at Rio over the last decades five or six decades providing the reader with an ex [...]

I came to this book interested in the favela born criminal underworld of Rio However, the scope is much accurate to the subtitle One World than I had been looking for This is an affecting tale of one man s choice to leave the legitimate economy for the drug economy driven by the high cost of his daughter s health care for a rare disorder. This is the story of an ordinary man who became the king of the largest slum in Rio, the head of a drug cartel, and perhaps Brazil s most wanted criminal He se [...]
